The French researchers had a comparative study on the nutritional composition changes of the bottled beverages. They have observed the behavior of the B-carotene, ascorbic acid, and A-tocopherols in the bottled beverages in PET and glass bottles. When 97 days passed away, they have found variations in three of them in both bottles. However, the beverage quality was the priority of the bottle filling machine manufacturers.
According to the researchers, the biggest trend in the packaging format in the last couple of years has been the sleek-design bottles. Glass bottles have been perceived superb in maintaining the quality of beverages especially carbonated drinks. Nevertheless, the glass bottles do not come off more superior as compared to the PET bottles. The PET bottles are better as contrasted to the glass bottles when it comes to preserving the nutrients of the beverages.
After three months of storage, the researchers noted the prominent degradation of ascorbic acid. The primary amount in PET and glass bottles was up to 55 at 70 percent. The researchers published this study in the Food Control journal. Ascorbic acid is an excellent Vitamin C source. It is present in diverse fortified beverage bottle available in the market.
The Studied Beverage
To go further, the researchers utilized a multi-vitamin and multi-fruit juice provided by Laiterie de in Saint-Denis’ hotel. This beverage was made up of orange, apple, pineapple, pear, grapes, mango, peach, banana, guava, apricot, lemon, and kiwi.
The researchers diluted this juice in water along with citric acid, sugar, and combination of vitamins. These vitamins incorporated vitamin A, C, B9, B6, and B1. It is not possible to observe the contacts amid vitamin E and C without adding A-tocopherol. So, the researchers also included A-tocopherol in the drink.
After that, the juice was wrapped up in the glass and PET bottles with the help of the typical beverage filling machine. For this study, they have used the PET of typical monolayer. In the PET bottle, it is only possible to add the beverage weighing up to 15 grams.
The researchers have used semi-automatic PET bottle filling machine for the PET bottles. These bottles were sealed with the help of polypropylene caps. There was no internal joint present in these bottles.
On the other hand, the researchers used a semi-automatic glass bottle filling machine for the glass bottles. This machine placed metallic caps on these glass bottles.
Assessing & Perceiving
When the bottles were filled with the beverage filling machine, then the dissolved oxygen concentration in the PET bottles was low as contrasted to the glass bottles. It implies that the PET bottles were good in controlling the ingress of oxygen. With time, there was a slow decline in this dissolved oxygen in both bottles.
Nevertheless, the degradation of ascorbic acid was strong in PET bottles. Moreover, B-carotene was oxidized to a high range in these bottles.
After comparing the glass and PET bottles, we can come to know that PET bottles are slightly better than the glass bottles. For this study, the researchers have not used automatic bottle filling machine but semi-automatic.
